SCOTT TURNER SCHOFIELD
in
Debutante Balls
Iowa debut | What advice does a 79-year
old South Carolina woman give to the nice young man looking for liquid
eyeliner at the makeup counter?
What’s the best way to demonstrate sex reassignment surgery while wearing
stiletto heels and kid gloves?
What happens when a debutante turns out to be a feminist?
Or when a lesbian turns transgender?
Scott Turner Schofield's acclaimed solo performance, Debutante Balls,
is a comedic look at coming of age
—
and coming out
—
from the perspective of one very young, very
queer white Southerner.
The show’s creator — an
award-winning Atlanta performer formerly known as KT Kilborn
— relates the history of the debutante ball, as both a social institution
and a highly personal experience.
Weaving stories from his own history, exploring the problematic (and often
hilarious) issues of gender, sexuality, race, and class as they play out
inside the wall-papered walls of Southern high society,
Schofield has created a theatrical event that the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution calls "funny, revealing, whip-smart and
poetic."
Charismatic and engaging, Scott Turner Schofield invites the audience to
explore the complexities and contradictions of out-of-place identities
— through a host of situations that are
as unbelievable as they are unbelievably, and comically, real. Through it
all, Schofield negotiates the issues with slapstick humor, clever on-stage
transformations, and a refreshing perspective that's equal parts honesty,
generosity, insight and wit.
