Thanks to Legion Arts
and CSPS, Cedar Rapids
is increasingly hosting theatrical events of national significance.
The Shoulder, a musical by New York playwright Dan Hurlin and
composer Dan Moses Schreier, had its world premiere at CSPS, as did Glory
Box, the latest from controversial Los Angeles performance artist Tim Miller.
Since its CSPS debut, Miller's work has since been seen in more than 40
cities in the U.S. and Europe.
In January 2002, Cedar Rapids was one of four
stops on the national tour of the acclaimed Texas troupe Rude Mechanicals and their groundbreaking production Lipstick Traces. In October of the same
year, Flow, the latest production from internationally recognized rap artist Will Power,
had its world premiere
at CSPS. In the intervening years, dynamic young theatre artists from across
the country, and around the world, have developed and shown their work at
CSPS.
Although best known for bringing outstanding artists to
Iowa, Legion Arts also has a track record of supporting Iowa artists,
often early in their development. Playwrights and performers whose early
work was seen at CSPS include Jeffery Byrd, Abinadi Meza, Rebecca Gilman and
two-time Obie Award-winner W.
David Hancock.
