Legion Arts initiates
artist relief fund
(June 2008)
On June 13, 2008, when Third Street was under 10 feet of water, Legion Arts
set up the Iowa Artist Relief Fund. Its purpose is two-fold: to assist
artists impacted by the flood in getting back on their feet, and to
help make it possible for them to remain in Eastern Iowa.
By summer's
end,
donors from 30 states and Canada, including a tremendous group of
theatre artists associated with Le Chat Noir in New Orleans, had
contributed more than $16,000 to the fund.
The first round of grants, amounting to $1,000 each, were awarded the
first week of August to
Blair Gauntt,
Andrew
Kidd,
David Leeper,
Sharon Neff,
John Schwartzkopf and
Leonardo Torcuato of Cedar Rapids, and
David Naso and
Russell Karkowski of Iowa City. All eight artists lost studios,
and several lost homes, as a result of the flooding.
In October
2008, $1,000 grants were awarded to visual artist
Lucy David of Iowa City, and to Cedar Rapids performing artists
Craig Erickson,
Jon Harnish,
Sandee Skelton.
Additional awards will be made as time goes on. If you're a visual artist or performing artist who was impacted by the
flood, please
