SONiA & disappear fear
The music has been described as "part intelligent
folk, part singer-songwriter, part sweaty rock-and-roll and part whimsical
pop."
The singer has been called "one of today's most socially relevant, and
gifted, songwriters."
The new album, Tango, is an innovative mix of the political and the
personal, recorded in Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic and English, with a
sound that can only be described as Latino-Middle Eastern folk-pop.
But for those who might need it, a little history: Sisters Sonia and Cindy Rutstein of Baltimore
created the folk-pop duo disappear fear in 1994, signing with Rounder
Records and releasing their first, self-titled CD. That CD won the GLAAD Award for Best Album and a GLAMA award, and was
named release of the year by Mix Magazine. Fueled by Sonia's writing, the
duo became a premiere folk-rock act, releasing four albums and touring
world wide, delivering potent lyrics and tackling issues from social
injustice, to personal relationships, to Sonia's experiences as a gay
woman. The duo's next release, Seed in the Sahara, was produced by
Bruce Springsteen's keyboardist, Roy Bittan, and won the GLAMA for best
band.
In 1998, Cindy forsook touring to become a full-time mom, and SONiA released Almost Chocolate,
her first solo CD. As a solo
artist, she remained a dynamite performer, noted for her distinctive
voice and winning style, her moving lyrics and inventive melodies. Her next release, Me, Too won the award for Female Artist
of the Year at the GLAMAs. Following another solo release Live at the
Down Home, SONiA decided it was time to restore the harmonies for
which disappear fear had always been known. She invited Laura Cerulli to
join the band on vocals, percussion and drums.
And now SONiA's duel career — half groundbreaking singer-songwriter, half
brave political activist — reaches new heights on the new CD, Tango.
Comprising a dozen songs recorded in Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic and English,
the album not only reverberates with a unique kind of Middle Eastern-Latin
pop. It also constitutes SONiA’s strongest depiction to date of what it
would mean to live life in a world without fear.
