issues | Born in Genoa, Italy, Beppe
Gambetta has been widely acknowledged as one of Europe’s foremost
guitarists, and a dazzling master of American idioms. But if you really want
to understand the musical universe of Beppe Gambetta, start with the smile.
Open and disarming, contagious and irresistible, it’s an invitation to a
musical journey characterized by lightness of heart and curiosity. Like any
good traveler, Gambetta knows that the most memorable journeys are those
that take us where we never expected to be.
With the horizon line serving as both challenge and attraction, Beppe has
spent years assembling his personal mosaic of sounds and flavors. After 10
CDs, four DVDs, four instructional books, and collaborations with top-flight
musicians around the globe, he’s rightfully recognized as a master innovator
on the acoustic guitar. Yet it’s not just his skills that attract fans and
critics, but his unique roots: a fiercely accomplished — and knowledgeable —
Italian musician who’s fallen head over heels in love with American country
and bluegrass.
Beppe’s most recent CD, Rendez-vous, was released in late 2008 on
Gadfly Records. The new CD, made up
of original duets, includes a stunning lead-off track with Patty Larkin. It
ends with a lullaby that Gambetta composed and dedicated to his mother, and
that he performs with his accordionist son. Once again, the flat-picking
maestro proves that he’s a world-class musician — one
who possesses an extraordinary sense of melody, remarkable technical
ingenuity and a rare open-heartedness.
Often compared to Leo Kottke, Tony Rice and Michael Hedges, Beppe Gambetta
has taken his smile and traversed the world, dazzling and charming music
enthusiasts everywhere.
