ELLIS
CD release concert | Ellis is a
rising star in the independent music scene. With her joyful, unpretentious
acoustic folk rock style, this Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter has been
steadily building a national following and has independently sold more than
thirty thousand copies of her previous five CDs. Touring more than 150 dates
each year, Ellis has accrued a wealth of accomplishments including multiple
“Best Musician” titles in Minneapolis and national songwriting honors, but
even more outstanding is her sincere graciousness and ability to remain down
to earth while her career is riding high.
Ellis got her start at 16, singing her own songs at open mics after moving
from Texas to Minnesota. She began touring full-time in 2000, focusing on
college campuses and winning the nomination in 2006 for “Best Female
Performer” by students across the US (Campus Activities Magazine). She
recently created a buzz on the folk music scene after being voted “Most
Wanted to Return” at the
2006 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, winning the top five award at the 2007
Telluride Troubadour contest and a standing ovation on the main stage at the
2007 Rocky Mountain Folks Festival.
Break The Spell is Ellis’ sixth full-length recording. Produced by
Ben Wisch (Marc Cohn, Patty Larkin), it is an 11-track collection of soulful
songs with musical accompaniment from Duke Levine and Oz Noy on electric
guitars, Zev Katz on bass, Joe Bonadio on drums as well as brief guest
appearances by Shawn Pelton on drums and Jonatha Brooke on backing vocals.
Fans and music critics have described Ellis’ music as a journey of self
discovery and awakening. Break The Spell embodies this, featuring
lyrics rich with meaning and arrangements that skillfully support Ellis’
hopeful message. Her songs explore the wonder of being alive, the power and
complexity of loss and the opportunity we have to re-invent ourselves.
