Amanda Bollinger is an artist living and working in Iowa City. Largely self-taught, Amanda works with a vast variety of media. Her passion is collage and using discarded, reclaimed and salvaged materials to create layers of texture that suggest organic forms and movement. As her work shifted to acrylic painting, many of the same discarded items that had been used for gluing and fusing together for collages and sculptures made excellent tools for scraping, shaping, stamping and applying paint.
In the artist’s own words:
“It is very rare to see me with a paintbrush in my hand unless I’m working on final details or mixing some concoction to dump on a canvas. I am driven to put images on surfaces, whether they are images I have seen in my mind’s eye or images that emerge as the materials interact. My work constantly teeters between purposeful and intuitive; this often this happens within the same piece. At times, it feels like channels are being switched inside my own mind, as if by a remote outside my control.”
