An accomplished Americana instrumentalist with foundations in jazz and swing music, Phoebe Hunt makes an impressive creative leap with her latest record, Shanti’s Shadow. It’s the culmination of a five-year journey that’s taken her from her Austin roots through Music Row, Brooklyn, and eventually to India to study with seventh-generation master violinist Kala Ramnath. Along the way, she found her voice, and has now delivered her most inspired set of songs to date — a soundtrack to her self-discovery.

Phoebe has always been skilled at taking seemingly disparate elements and pulling them together into a dazzling kaleidoscope of lush, coherent sound and rhythm patterns. The masterfully crafted songs on the new album are brought to life by the musicians Phoebe gathered – each a virtuoso in their own right. Prior to recording this album, the entire band traveled to India to study at an ashram outside of Pune. They practiced music, meditation and philosophy – sometimes spending as many as 10 hours a day working and re-working tats and ragas. The result is music that swells, crashes and breathes organically under the singer’s soulful, plaintive voice. Always surprising yet comfortingly familiar, sounds of Americana and Texas-tinged swing bump up against exotic rhythmic concepts culled from the band’s time in India. An intense, experiential amalgamation is apparent in the seamless musical play and improvisation of Shanti’s Shadow. Says Rolling Stone, “The album breathes new life into a genre that’s sometimes so respectful of the past, it fails to push toward the future. Hunt certainly doesn’t neglect her roots, but she doesn’t wallow in the dirt of her influences, either.”
