She was a New York kid, barely known outside the coffeehouses of Greenwich Village, when she took the stage on the first night of the legendary Woodstock Music and Arts Festival. Performing her original song, "Beautiful People," she inspired the first panorama of candles and cigarette lighters ever to take place at a concert event. That, in turn, moved the young singer to write "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” which sold more than a million copies the following year, prompting Billboard, Cashbox, Melody Maker, Record World, and Bravo to name her Female Vocalist of 1970. The next year her infectious single about freedom and roller skates, "Brand New Key," took Melanie to the top of the pop charts. Soon she was appearing on Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson, and Dick Cavett. With her guitar in hand, and a combination of vocal talent, disarming humor, and vibrant engagement, she became one of the first pop artists to appear at London’s Royal Albert Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall. She went on to headline performances at the Metropolitan Opera, the Sydney Opera House, and the General Assembly of the United Nations. In the years that followed, Melanie continued to write, record, and tour. UNICEF made her its spokesperson; Jimi Hendrix's father introduced her at a concert marking the twentieth anniversary of Woodstock.

The decades since have done little to dim Melanie’s incandescent presence or diminish that unmistakable voice. Her records continue to sell -- more than eighty million to date. Her songs have been covered by singers as diverse as Cher, Dolly Parton, Macy Gray, Miley Cyrus and – most recently – Maddie Poppe. It’s all part of the phenomenon that’s Melanie. As noted pop critic John Rockwell has observed, “Melanie’s cult has long been famous, but it’s a cult that’s responding to something genuine and powerful — which may be another way of saying that this writer counts himself part of it.” Take it from Rockwell: this is your opportunity to experience Melanie live, in person, in an intimate venue. Don't miss it.
