Hailing from the cities of Armagh and Derry, Connla has been called “the hottest new group out of Northern Ireland.” Since the release of their album River Waiting in 2016, the quintet has made an impact on the folk and traditional scenes, garnering fantastic reviews at home and abroad, and attracting a following that stretches across Ireland, UK, Europe and the US. Meanwhile the accolades keep coming: Best New Group at the Live Ireland Music Awards, Album of the Year from Irish American News, Concert of the Year at the Livvies Awards. The bandmates are close, longtime friends, each imbued with the musical traditions of their family and village. Together they make up that rare group that’s musically attractive to the trad purist, as well as the music fan who knows next to nothing of the tradition. Songlines magazine dubbed Connla a “must see act” when the group last toured the UK, marveling that “a band this young shouldn’t be this good.” The group’s sensitive, innovative arrangements of modern and traditional tunes come together to create a sound that’s definitely, even joyously, identifiable as Connla.
