She was a New York kid, barely known outside the coffeehouses of Greenwich Village, when she took the stage on the first night of the legendary Woodstock Music and Arts Festival. Performing her original song, "Beautiful People," she inspired the first panorama of candles and cigarette lighters ever to take place at a concert event. That, in turn, moved the young singer to write "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain),” which sold more than a million copies the following year, prompting Billboard, Cashbox, Melody Maker, Record World, and Bravo to name her Female Vocalist of 1970.
