Making Movies

June 20, 2019 at 7:00pm

Based in Kansas City, and comprising a pair of brothers from Panama, and another pair from Mexico, Making Movies creates an overwhelming musical presence that takes the listener through landscapes festive and furious, refreshing and dark. The falsetto singing of Diego Chi can take you to the underworld, while the fuzz of Enrique Chi’s guitar anchors the band’s sound amid the Chaurand brothers’ primal, folkloric percussion. It’s an explosion of energy on the stage: does the soundtrack make the movie, or the movie make the soundtrack?

The Iguanas

The Iguanas

July 9, 2019 at 7:00pm

What if Americana actually encompassed all of North America? You'd have the Franco-Acadian inflections of Canada, exemplified by accordion, blues and jazz, the only truly indigenous musics the US has ever produced, combined with the lilting grace and fiery passion of Mexican music. You'd also have New Orleans' premiere distillers of this continental musical melange, The Iguanas, and their latest album Juarez.

Seth Glier (pronounced “Gleer”) recorded his latest album, Birds, in an airy loft in western Massachusetts. The room’s outfitted with a grand piano and floor-to-ceiling windows, and the birds roosting outside the windows became a sympathetic audience while he completed the album. “I felt a tremendous amount of comfort talking to the birds,” he says. “I’d check in with them regularly to see how they thought things were going so far.”

Holly Bowling

Holly Bowling

September 6, 2019 at 8:00pm

Texture, nuance, and a gift for dexterous high-wire improvisation are the hallmarks of San Francisco pianist Holly Bowling, classically trained, and now infusing jam band music with her technically advanced, emotionally rich style. After studying piano performance at San Francisco State University, Bowling turned her agile mind and interpretive prowess to the works of Phish on 2013’s Distillation of a Dream, and to the Grateful Dead on her 2016 release Better Left Unsung. Her compelling playing, and unerring ability to successfully collaborate with other musicians in an impressive array of styles, has brought her to the attention of Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes, and other luminaries who’ve asked Bowling to perform with them. Already a rising star on the festival circuit, Bowling continues to expand her solo touring, and recently formed the new band Ghost Light with Tom Hamilton, Steve Lyons, Raina Mullen and Scotty Zwang.

HAWKTAIL

HAWKTAIL

September 29, 2019 at 6:00pm

They’re forging their own brand of roots music — one grounded in timeless tradition, crafted by top-shelf musicianship, and performed with jubilant comradery. While music fans will recognize them from their various other outfits (Punch Brothers, David Rawlings, Crooked Still, A Prairie Home Companion), and while three of the four members were previously a trio, HAWKTAIL presents an entirely new and unique offering. The instrumental talents of Brittany Haas on fiddle, Paul Kowert on bass, Jordan Tice on guitar, and Dominick Leslie on mandolin come together in an intricate tapestry of intertwining refrains. The music displays a breadth of acumen and ambition rarely heard in a band this young: Norwegian dance rhythms sit atop traditional Appalachian folk, while bluegrass is woven into the fundamentals of chamber music and jazz.
