Holly Bowling

Holly Bowling

September 6, 2019 at 8:00pm

Texture, nuance, and a gift for dexterous high-wire improvisation are the hallmarks of San Francisco pianist Holly Bowling, classically trained, and now infusing jam band music with her technically advanced, emotionally rich style. After studying piano performance at San Francisco State University, Bowling turned her agile mind and interpretive prowess to the works of Phish on 2013’s Distillation of a Dream, and to the Grateful Dead on her 2016 release Better Left Unsung. Her compelling playing, and unerring ability to successfully collaborate with other musicians in an impressive array of styles, has brought her to the attention of Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes, and other luminaries who’ve asked Bowling to perform with them. Already a rising star on the festival circuit, Bowling continues to expand her solo touring, and recently formed the new band Ghost Light with Tom Hamilton, Steve Lyons, Raina Mullen and Scotty Zwang.

Who can forget Rusted Root? The multi-platinum band out of Pittsburgh revolved around the writing talents and distinct sound of Michael Glabicki, and went on to become into a musical entity that thrived in a category all its own, producing more than seven albums and selling more than three million units. HAWKTAIL

HAWKTAIL

September 29, 2019 at 6:00pm

They’re forging their own brand of roots music — one grounded in timeless tradition, crafted by top-shelf musicianship, and performed with jubilant comradery. While music fans will recognize them from their various other outfits (Punch Brothers, David Rawlings, Crooked Still, A Prairie Home Companion), and while three of the four members were previously a trio, HAWKTAIL presents an entirely new and unique offering. The instrumental talents of Brittany Haas on fiddle, Paul Kowert on bass, Jordan Tice on guitar, and Dominick Leslie on mandolin come together in an intricate tapestry of intertwining refrains. The music displays a breadth of acumen and ambition rarely heard in a band this young: Norwegian dance rhythms sit atop traditional Appalachian folk, while bluegrass is woven into the fundamentals of chamber music and jazz.

John McCutcheon is folk music’s Renaissance man: a master instrumentalist, powerful singer-songwriter, storyteller, activist and author. His 30 recordings have garnered every honor imaginable, including seven Grammy nominations. He is a master of a dozen traditional instruments, including hammer dulcimer, guitar, banjo, autoharp, mountain dulcimer, fiddle and Jew’s harp. “The most impressive instrumentalist I’ve ever heard,” he was called by none other than Johnny Cash. Moreover, his work with many of the legendary figures of Appalachian music resulted in a love of not only home-made music, but of community and rootedness. His commitment to grassroots political organizations has put him on the frontlines of issues important to working people, and the songs he sings, whether traditional or original, are political, socially conscious, and inevitably moving. This is music with a profound sense of place, family and strength. Says The Washington Post, “He has an uncanny ability to breathe new life into the familiar … his storytelling has the richness of fine literature”
