Dubbed by NPR the “Empress of the Unexpected,” Susan Werner continues her reign as one of the boldest and most creative forces on the acoustic music scene today. The Manchester, Iowa, native is a triple threat: a singer and songwriter boasting a luxuriously smooth and strong voice (she studied opera at the University of Iowa); witty, riveting lyrics; and evocative, unforgettable melodies. “When it comes to crafting a song, Ms. Werner’s only peers are Jimmy Webb and Paul Simon,” raves No Depression. As CSPS audiences have discovered repeatedly, Susan as a live performer can do it all. She's a virtuoso on both piano and guitar, and her recordings have ranged from hardcore folk to Broadway music, humorous songs, a skeptical yet sympathetic take on gospel, songs about farmers and farming, and even classical arrangements of classic rock. Susan has a way of reinventing herself for each new project, but there's always a core of humor, sophistication, and musical craft that endures. She returns to CSPS Hall with -- what else? -- an album of Cuban-flavored music, reflecting her recent sojourns in Havana.
