Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with one of the hottest Celtic bands on the planet. Calan brings together the remarkable talents of five young musicians, each adept at giving a fresh, vibrant sound to Welsh musical traditions. Their lively, contemporary approach breathes new life into old customs, conjuring up sparkling melodies, tunes to set your foot tapping, and their own spirited, championship step dancing. Calan’s unique instrumental blend features not only fiddles, whistles, guitar and bagpipes, but the pibgorn, a traditional Welsh reed instrument incorporating a wooden pipe and the horns of a bull. A typical show sees the band blasting their way through beloved old reels, jigs and hornpipes, then melting into the most beautiful and haunting song and ballads imaginable. The group, whose devotion to fun and eye-catching clothes have raised a few eyebrows among traditionalists, see themselves as the next generation of musical ambassadors, attracting new audiences, while raising the profile of Welsh music worldwide. Since releasing their first album in 2008, the quintet has attracted rave reviews from critics and delirious reactions from audiences everywhere. They’ve played the world’s major Celtic festivals, and toured extensively in Belgium, Italy, France and the UK, as well as four times to North America. This St Patrick’s Day show represents the band’s Cedar Rapids debut.
