Huddled round a single microphone, singing intimate duets with mountain dulcimer and guitar, Hannah Sanders & Ben Savage are an acoustic duo that sounds classically timeless, yet at the same time unique. It’s folk music, at the deepest level, while also transcending the constraints of that genre. While the two musicians fleetingly evoke memories of Gram & Emmylou, Gillian & David, and Shirley Collins & Davey Graham, their warm distilling of influences from both sides of the Atlantic -- Hannah grew up in a family of English folk singers, and trained as an anthropologist in the US; Ben’s a member of acclaimed British folk group The Willows – has produced a refined sound that is decidedly their own. Over the past three years, while touring the UK, Europe and America, the duo has managed to enrapture audiences and critics alike with the sparkling beauty of their acoustic style. fRoots calls the group “spellbinding,” the BBC has praised their “inventive, amazing work,” while No Depression raves “Sanders has a voice of sparkling clarity that soars above and dips around Savage’s dobro … the harmonies are exquisite.” Musical explorers will want to check out what one critic describes as ‘an exquisite soundscape, the result of passion, precision and unbridled intimacy,” and what another reviewer has dubbed “a match made in musical heaven.”
